SURFCAMP - GENERAL INFO

Where is the surfcamp?

Our surf camp is based in the north of Portugal, on a little beach village called Lavra in the municipality of Matosinhos just north of Porto. Click here for Google maps link

Our surf camp is inside the camping park of Orbitur Angeiras, a campsite certified and recognized by the quality of its services and its facilities. It is located about 7 mins walk from the local beach. It has shower blocks with continuous hot water, a mini-market, a restaurant, a bar, a swimming pool, and football, volleyball, and tennis courts. Check the camping park website here.

How do I get to the surfcamp?

The closest airport is Porto Airport (OPO) which is about 10 mins drive from the camp.

The easiest and quickest way to get to the surfcamp is by car or taxi. Once you arrive at the campsite Orbitur Angeiras, go to the reception and let them know that you’re staying with I Surf Portugal surf camp, they will guide you to the surf camp. In the evening, you will meet with the rest of the crew and the other guests to enjoy a welcome meal together!

Taxi from Porto Airport (easiest and quickest): There are always many taxis at the airport. You can get a taxi from there directly without booking. If you prefer booking one in advance you can always use the Uber app. The price of a taxi is between 10€ and 15€.

Public transport from Porto Airport or Porto center (longest): Although it is not far at all, it is quite complicated and long to get to the surf camp by public transport as you have to get to Porto center by metro from the airport and then take a bus (which has many stops before reaching the final destination).

From the airport, take the metro (purple line) to "Sete Bicas". From there take the bus line 104 to Orbitur Angeiras. You can click here to have more details.

Arriving by car: If you arrive by car, enter the following address into your navigation system: Camping Orbitur Angeiras, Rua de Angeiras - Lavra, 4455-039 Matosinhos.

You can park your car on the external car park of the campsite or inside the campsite, both come with additional costs payable upon arrival directly to the camping park. Click here for Google maps link.

I would like a customised surf camp package but can´t book online.

On our website, you can book 1-week surf holiday packages directly. If you would like to stay for 2 weeks or more or arrive on different days during the low season we can do that for you.

Just get in touch with us via our contact page and tell us which options you would like to book. We’ll get back to you with an individual package.

I want to stay less than 7 days, is that possible?

Our surf camp experience is shaped to a minimum stay of 7 days, therefore we don’t recommend to stay fewer days. If you wish to receive more information, feel free to get in touch with us.

Is is possible to arrive on any day?

During the low season, you can choose your arrival day. In high season our fixed arrival and departure day is on Saturdays.

I’m travelling alone, can I book a private accommodation?

For single travellers we recommend a stay in one of our shared tipi tents. They are very spacious and give you enough room to store your stuff and meet other globe trotters!

If you really want a private tipi for you, get in touch for a quote.

How far is the beach from the camp?

We are very close to the beach, it takes about 5 to 7 minutes to walk from the camping to the beach. It is not a surfing beach though, the surfing beach is about 15 mins drive from the camp, transfers are included during the surf lessons.

What activities are there for adults?

You will obviously get busy with surfing during the lessons. We have a yoga package you can choose, to relax your muscles, mind and be in touch with nature. Relax in the hammock for a nap or practice your balance in our slacklines.

The camping has a few sports courts including tennis, football, volleyball, basketball, etc. There is a nice big swimming pool and a mini golf. If you prefer to can go to the local beach to enjoy some sea and sun.

Grab a drink in the evening from our little bar and enjoy a card or board game with the other surfers, or just chill by the campfire at night with a guitar and good company. We organise a few activities during the week such as cocktail night, movie night, pub quiz, etc.

What activities are there for my kids?

In our family camp, the kids won’t get bored easily! Outside the surf lessons, they can play in a safe environment. They can climb on the pine trees, grab a skateboard, play in the swimming pool, or the sports courts (we have balls, rackets, ping pong), play different card and board games, use the slacklines, or join our weekly camp activities like the Olympic beach games or the kids' movie night.

I’m travelling with a baby, do you have the right facilities?

Our family surf camp can accommodate your family including babies and kids of all ages. In the camp, you will find high chairs and baby beds, in the sanitary block there is a baby bath and a changing table. You can access the open guest kitchen in case you need to prepare any special meals for your little one.

What facilities are there at the camp?

On the surf camp, you’ll find a fully equipped kitchen, a chill-out area with loungers and hammocks, some slack-lines, a campfire and a little bar.

As a guest of our surf camp, you can use all facilities of the campsite. You’ll find a swimming pool, sports courts (tennis, football, volleyball, basketball), a restaurant, a bar/café, a little supermarket, a games room, laundry machines, sanitary blocks with toilets and showers.

Is there WiFi at the camp?

We do not have guest wifi at the surf camp but there is free wifi at the reception of the campsite and a wifi room inside the camping.

Would you recommend to book a rental car?

The surf camp is situated about 10 mins drive from the airport, and the best way to cone is by taxi/Uber. Once at the camp you can walk to town to the local beach and the many fish restaurants. For the surf lessons we drive you to the surfing beach by van. So there is no need of a car if you don´t want to, unless you would like to take some time to visit the north of Portugal. You don´t need a car if you would like to visit Porto as it would be too difficult to park there.

In short, if you intend to stay at the camp you don´t really need a car, and if you decide to visit the North of Portugal you could always rent a car from the airport just for the day.

I have a question but can´t see it here.

We have more specific FAQ´s under each of our surf camp offers, you can check them below:

SURFCAMP - SURFING

How big are the surf groups?

The surf groups for adults have a maximum capacity of 8 students per instructor but we usually make the groups with 6 students when we can. We’ll divide the groups according to your experience level to ensure you have the best learning progress. The kids are taught in groups of 4 kids per instructor, usually divided by level and age.

Which beach do we surf in?

We surf on a couple of nice surfing spots north of Porto namely Azurara and Estela.

They are both beach breaks that are safe bit good for surfing at all levels.

We drive everyone to the beach for the surf lessons and back.

In which languages are the surf lessons taught?

Our surf lessons usually take place in English, but our surf instructors also speak German, French and Spanish. If you don’t feel confident enough in English, please let us know while booking so we can guarantee your surf instructor giving you individual feedback in the right language.

In the kids groups, we’re trying to group kids with the same language together, so the lessons can be held in German, French or English.

SURFCAMP - TIPI TENTS

What does my tent come with?

Each tipi tent comes with storage space for your clothes, electricity and light. The beds are fully set up with comfortable mattresses, bedding and cotton linen.

What do I need to bring?

We’ll provide bedding, but please don’t forget to bring towels to shower and for the beach. As the nights in the North of Portugal are usually rather cool, don’t forget to bring warm clothes for the evenings!

I booked a shared tent, who is staying in there with me?

We have a shared ladies’, a shared mens’ and a shared mixed tipi. If you rather want to stay in a tent with other people of your gender, please let us know while you’re booking so we can take that into consideration.

We are a family of more than 4 persons, is the accommodation big enough for us?

Our family tipis are set up with four beds, so if you need more sleeping places, you can book an additional mini tipi for your family. The mini tipi will be located close to your main tent and comes with two extra beds with mattresses, bedding and linen.

SURFCAMP - FOOD

What can I expect for breakfast?

Breakfast is the most important meal on a surf camp, therefore you’ll find a big selection of food in the mornings. A typical breakfast buffet includes coffee, tea, different juices, milk, oats, cornflakes, yogurt, fruit, cheese, ham, butter, jams, peanut butter, and fresh bread.

I don´t eat certain foods, what options are they?

Our kitchen team caters to vegan and vegetarian diets, too. Just let us know your food preference or allergies while booking and we’ll make sure to have the right kind of food for you.

Is the dinner child-friendly?

Our chef cooks international meals throughout the week, like Mexican wraps, Italian pasta, Indian curry or a Portuguese BBQ. If your children prefer plainer food, please check with our kitchen staff, so they know to put something on the side for you!

What options are there for lunch?

For lunch you can sign up for our home-made lunch packages including sandwiches, fruit and a drink of your choice. If you prefer to cook yourself, you can use our fully equipped kitchen. If you want to try the Portuguese cuisine, you can visit the campsite restaurant and the many local restaurants with a good variety including fresh fish and seafood.

Are drinks included with the meals?

Drinks are not included at dinners. We have a selection of drinks available on camp at the bar or the supermarket.

Is there drinking water available?

The tap water on the campsite is of drinking quality, so you can use it for drinking, cooking and washing all the same.

SURF SCHOOL - PORTO & AZURARA

Where is the surf school in Azurara?

At Azurara beach, you will find our vans at the car park just when you arrive at the beach.

How is the beach for surfing?

Azurara beach is one of the best beaches for surfing north of Porto. It´s great for all levels from beginners to advanced. It´s a beach break with a sandy bottom, and several peaks along the beach.

The best tide to surf Azurara is between low to mid and mid to low on most conditions. When it starts pumping it works better towards high tide, but don´t go there on a normal or small day at high tide as it could be flat.

Do you only have surf lessons or also rent gear?

We have surf lessons for all levels but also rent surf and SUP gear.

We have soft top boards, hardtop surfboards, different sizes, SUP boards, paddle, wetsuits all sizes, etc. You´ll find what you´re looking for!

Just get in touch before meeting us just to make sure we are there to welcome you!

Where is the meeting in Porto?

For surf lessons from Porto, we meet righ tin the center, in front of the Town Hall on the left when you look at the Town Hall itself (by the taxi rank). The closest metro station is Trindade.

Check our Porto meeting point location here.

What do I need to bring for the surf lessons?

As we provide all the surf gear, all you need to bring is a swimsuit (small shorts for men or speedos are even better), a towel, sunscreen, water & flip flops.

How long is the ride from Porto to the beach?

The beach is not far from Porto, it´s a bit further north. Depending on the time and traffic it could take anywhere from 20 mins to 30 mins to get to the beach. There are closer beaches but they are not as good for surfing and some are quite polluted. We take you to a beautiful beach with sand dunes and no crowds (outside the summer).
